Tokyo!

  A Quick Summary We landed in Tokyo on Sunday and spent 4 nights exploring the city, including a day trip to a nearby town called Hakone! We are now on the train to our next stop (Matsumoto), which I’ll write about in the next post.  Highlights Hakone We took a day trip to Hakone, which is a town in the mountains near Mt. Fuji. Unfortunately, Mt. Fuji was clouded over when we were there, but we still got to see some great views. We got to ride a variety of things, including: a boat across the lake that looked like a pirate ship, a gondola over a sulphur mine, and also a train that did switchbacks up the mountain (the driver would get out and walk to the other end of the train, then it would reverse up the next leg). The city Seeing Tokyo was really neat. It is such a massive city and there is so much variety in the things we did. Some Smaller Cities

A Quick Summary From Tokyo, we took the train to Matsumoto, a small city in the mountains. We spent two nights there exploring, and also took a day trip to Nagano to see the snow monkeys! Then we took the train down to Kyoto, where we spent four nights. We took a day trip to Osaka to see the World Expo as well. Highlights Matsumoto Area Matsumoto was such a big change from Tokyo. It is really quiet there, less crowded, and everything closes really early. It was super nice getting to spend some time there and see a totally different side of Japan! We tried some soba noodles (the area is known for them), toured a local miso factory (apparently 55% of the miso in Japan is produced in this region), and also explored a castle. Trains, Bikes, and Planes

  Summary This will be a shorter post, since there was only 4 days left in our trip! We took the train all the way from Katsuura to Hiroshima, which took almost a full day (with a few transfers along the way). After spending a couple nights in Hiroshima, we went to Onomichi. There, we rented bikes and did a 2 day bike trip called the Shimanami Kaido across some islands to Imabari. Then, we flew back to Tokyo, and then back to Vancouver.  Full map Last few days Highlights Miyajima Island While we were in Hiroshima, we took a day trip to a nearby island called Miyajima. It was pretty touristy, but it was really nice! We got to see a Torii gate out in the middle of the ocean, and hiked up to the top of the island for a nice view of the area. They also had these deer that were pretty aggressive in trying to get food from the tourists.  On the ferry over Torii gate Deer!
